Arm Lift / Reduction

Sagginess of the arms, particularly inner arms is not an unusual problem. This can be an inherent presentation or following weight loss. Many patients are self conscious of the appearance. This can restrict your choice of clothing and can on occasions be out of proportion to the rest of your body frame.

What is Arm Lift / Reduction ?

Arm lift surgery aims to remove the slack, saggy skin on the inner arms. Liposuction can be an option in certain cases.

The Surgery

The arm lift / reduction operation is done under a general anaesthetic (while you are asleep). It involves a scar along the armpit and along the inside length of the arm short of the elbow, depending on the extent of laxity. Patients usually stay 1-2 nights in hospital. Drains if used are removed before your discharge.

Recovery

You can expect some bruising and swelling to occur as well as a tight feeling in the arms. You are advised to keep the dressings dry. Your wounds are reviewed 7-10 days after the sugery. The stitches are dissolvable. You need to avoid any strenuous exercise for approximately 6 weeks.

Potential Risks

Every surgical procedure carries a certain amount of risk, and it is important that you understand the risks involved with arm reduction.

You would expect bruising, some discomfort, a certain degree of asymmetry between the 2 sides. The healing can be somewhat slow on occasions and a red prominent scar may result. Scars can migrate to the front of the arm, hence be more visible. In exceptional circumstances, skin graft might be required to help with the healing.

Bleeding, infection, wound break down, excessive scarring, blood clots in leg veins and/or lung and further revisional surgery are general risks that can follow any operation.
