Face / Neck Lift

The natural ageing process results in loss of skin elasticity leading to sagginess of facial skin, creases to deepen, the jaw and neckline to slacken. This may result in a “tired” looking face. Many people are very frustrated by this appearance, as it is the wrong reflection of how they feel. This can reflect on the self-confidence.

What is Face/Neck Lift?

Facelift surgery involves removal of excess skin from the face and tightening of the underlying slack muscle. This aims to rejuvenate the face to result in a fresher more youthful looking appearance. It is best to try and lose weight if you were overweight. Smoking should be stopped at least 6 weeks before surgery. There are a number of modifications of the facelift surgery scars; this is best discussed during the consultation.

The Surgery

The standard facelift surgery is done under a general anaesthetic (while you are asleep). Incisions are made above the hair line at the temples and extend in a natural line down the front of the ear, or just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear, and continue around behind the earlobe and up in the crease behind the ear and off into the lower scalp. Occasionally it may be necessary to make a small incision under the chin. You are in the hospital for approximately 2 nights. Drains, if used, are removed prior to your discharge. Fat along the jaw line and under the chin may be removed by liposuction or on occasion through an incision under the chin.

Recovery

The face will be bandaged to minimise bruising and swelling. These bandages will stay for few days. You are advised to keep your dressings dry. It is best to keep the head elevated on few pillows. The wounds will be checked approximately 7-10 days after surgery. The sutures and staples are removed approximately 10-15 days after surgery. It is best to avoid physical work and any strenuous exercise for 6 weeks. In case of liposuction, a pressure garment will be required for approximately 6 weeks.

Potential Risks

Every surgical procedure carries a certain amount of risk, and it is important that you understand the risks involved with facelift.

There is usually apparent swelling and bruising of the face and neck. The scars usually heal satisfactorily, however they can be red and lumpy in a number of patients depending on their healing abilities. The healing can also be slow particularly in the scar behind the ear, which may result in a hairless patch. Receding of the hairline is also a potential risk. There will be a certain degree of asymmetry, however none of us have exactly symmetrical sides of our body. The ear can be numb and the ear lobules can be displaced. The very significant risk of this operation is damage to the facial nerve. Damage to this nerve or its branches can affect your ability to lift your eyebrow, close your eyelids and may result in droopiness of the corner of the mouth. This is a stroke- like appearance.

Bleeding, infection, wound break down, excessive scarring, blood clots in leg veins and/or lung and further revisional surgery are general risks that can follow any operation. The risk of bleeding (haematoma) is particularly high in facelift surgery.
