Decision Making Guidance

  1. Sanity Not Vanity:  The perception of our appearance is a very individual matter. This should be well recognised and respected. Your decision to have cosmetic surgery should be based on what makes you happy/confident. Remember looking and feeling good about yourself sends a signal to the world that you are confident, successful and happy.

  2. Timing of surgery: We all have our own reasons in choosing the timing of surgery. This could be financial, work related, family related, relationships, or simply having the courage to make a decision. Age is usually not a factor in the decision-making.

  3. GP Advice: Many GPs are very happy to advise patients. Referral letters are not mandatory.

  4. Beware of Free Consultations, Booking Fees and Non-refundable deposits: We are all aware that nothing is for free. A suitably qualified surgeon is very unlikely to utilise his time and expenses for free consultations. Note, not every surgeon is a consultant in his specialty. You should not be under any pressure for decision-making and you should be allowed more than one consultation to ensure all your questions are answered. You should not be bound by non-refundable deposits for surgery.

  5. Comfort factor: Make sure you see and meet your surgeon from day one and feel comfortable with his approach. Remember it’s your surgeon who will perform the surgery, not any other practitioners (managers, nurses, etc). The surgeon and only the surgeon performing your surgery can give realistic expectations of what could be achieved. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons can provide information on the suitably qualified surgeons www.baaps.org.uk

  6. Think Local hospital: Do not travel a long distance for surgery. Resist the temptation as part of a holiday package. You should not be operated on by a surgeon, you have never seen or interacted with. Think beyond the surgery. What if there were complications? This could be days, weeks or months after the surgery. How much would your GP or the surgeon in the UK know about your previous surgery? What arrangements are in place to sort out problems if and when they arise?
Hospitals that are associated with NHS consultants and practice will adhere to certain standards and so offer some level of reassurance.

  7. Cosmetic surgery can be tailor- made surgery: Plastic surgery can be, in many situations, tailor made to accommodate any current conditions or patients requests. Equally it is not wise to compare your operation with others who may have had a similar procedure.

  8. Benefits vs. risks: Ensure you are fully informed of the limitations and risks of the cosmetic operation you are considering.

  9. You Can Always Change Your Mind: Hopefully you have taken your time and made the right decision for you, but remember you have the option to cancel right up until the time you go to sleep for surgery. No reputable surgeon or hospital would normally impose any penalty for cancellations. It is an operation after all.

  10. Quality NOT Quantity:  Beware of cheaper offers. Look for a suitably qualified surgeon, reasonable hospital stay and availability of 24 hours support. The quality of products, implants and follow up appointments is important. Cheaper alternatives may represent a compromise. Remember this is an operation.
