Non-Surgical Cosmetic

Cosmetic non- surgical treatments, as in Botox and Fillers are widely used to treat wrinkles, which are part of the normal ageing process. Botox is one of the most commonly used injections in the cosmetic non-surgical treatment of wrinkles, with a high satisfaction rate. It can also be used to lift eyebrows. It may result in a more relaxed smoother face. Botox can also be used to treat excessive sweating of the armpits and palms of the hands.

Botox is ideal for softening frown lines and crows feet. It can also be used in treatment of neck bands.

What is Botox ?

Botox works by weakening the action of the muscles that maybe responsible for development of the wrinkles/creases. This is best used for forehead creases and crows feet. It was first used cosmetically in 1990, to reduce facial wrinkles. Its effects are temporary and last for only 4 months. The injection could be repeated.

The Botox Injection Procedure

Botox is injected directly into the muscles that cause the wrinkles, using a very small needle. When used to treat excessive sweating in the armpits, Botox is injected directed into the axillary skin (under armpit). No sedation or local anaesthesia is required. The procedure is done in the clinic.  Normal activities can be resumed immediately. There is no recovery period required. You are advised to squeeze and release the eyelids for 2 hours after injections of the upper part of the face . Botox usually takes effect 24-72 hours after injection, with maximum effect at about 1 to 2 weeks.

Potential Risks

Every cosmetic procedure carries a certain amount of risk, and it is important that you understand the risks involved in Botox injections.

Botox is best avoided in patients with neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, those who are taking certain muscle relaxants, aspirin or warfarin, pregnant or breast feeding women and those with bleeding disorders.

No severe complications after cosmetic use of Botox have been reported. Slight bruising and swelling to be expected. Patients may experience a migraine-like headache. Droopiness of the eyebrows or upper eyelid can occur, however this is self-limiting and soon recovers.

Fillers

Fillers (Restylane and Perlane) are popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments that help to 'fill out' and smooth away grooves, wrinkles and pitted scars. It can also be used to augment certain parts as lips. Restylane Sub-Q is used to enhance the cheek area, while the Restylane Vital range is used in rejuvenating the hands.

What are Fillers?

The fillers range from temporary, lasting up to 6 months or semi-permanent, lasting up to 2 years. The longer term fillers have a higher risk of rejection, excessive scar formation (granuloma) and inflammation. They are difficult to remove, should this be required. Generally speaking, the injections can be repeated.

Filler Injections

The injections are given in the area using a very small needle. This is usually done in the consulting rooms in outpatients.

There is no recovery period necessary when you undergo dermal fillers.

Potential Risks

Redness, swelling and bruising which is normal and will subside. Slight lumpiness from the injected gel can sometimes be noticed. The response/ benefits of injection can vary from one patient to another.
